Assistive Technology
Assistive technology prescription is a fundamental aspect of occupational therapy aimed at identifying and implementing technological solutions to enhance individuals' functional independence and participation in daily activities. The objective is to bridge the gap between an individual's abilities and their desired level of engagement in activities, promoting autonomy and inclusion.
This process involves a comprehensive assessment of the client's needs, considering their physical, cognitive, and sensory abilities, while taking into account the individual's environment, tasks, and goals. As part of this, the equipment is always trialled with the OT and the client either within a specialised mobility store or within their home or workplace (sometimes all three, depending on the type of equipment) to ensure that the equipment is suitable and safe for the client in all contexts.
Depending on the type, cost, and risk-level of the equipment, an OT assistive technology report may also be required for NDIS submission and approval.
Technologies may include mobility aids (mobility scooters, four-wheel walkers, walking sticks, sling hoists), assistive kitchen equipment, personal care aids (toilet seat raisers, shower chairs, commodes), vision impairment aids, adaptive computer interfaces, and other specialised tools tailored to the client's specific challenges.
Flying Kite OT will support you and your family in understanding which items may be best for you and how it could be funded through your NDIS plan. Please note that Flying Kite OT does not provide complex and customised wheelchair prescription.
