Mental Health Services

Mental health occupational therapy provides therapeutic support for individuals with mental health conditions through various means. At Flying Kite OT, the focus is on enhancing engagement in meaningful activities which foster a sense of purpose and mastery, as well as support in developing effective practical, somatic and cognitive-behavioural strategies and skills to increase independence and engagement in daily life.

Flying Kite OT provides a trauma-informed approach and has several years' of experience in addressing a range of mental health challenges, including trauma, reduced motivation, anxiety and emotional regulation, forming healthy interpersonal relationships and boundaries, disordered eating, and hoarding.

The occupational therapist will work together with the individual to work towards meaningful goals in the identified area/s of need. Sessions are client-led and maintained at a pace that promotes both growth and safety. The process may involve identifying personal history, strengths, interests and goals, before collaborating to develop a holistic person-centred plan. Interventions may include establishing routines and incorporating purposeful activities to enhance motivation, agency and self-worth. Specific modalities may include cognitive-behavioural strategies, such as mindfulness, graded exposure and cognitive reframing, as well as somatic therapy, including breathwork and trauma-informed yoga & meditation.

Flying Kite OT places a strong emphasis on client empowerment, providing client-led therapy while making measurable progress through a graded approach. It is of great importance that all clients feel heard and respected at all times so that they may focus on achieving their goals and improving their mental health and overall functionality within a safe, judgment-free and supportive environment.
