Life Skills Training & Employment

Life skills training and employment support within the scope of occupational therapy involves a targeted approach to enhance an individual's capacity for independent living and successful engagement in the workforce.

At Flying Kite OT, the OT works together with the individual to identify interests, existing skills and goals surrounding independent living and working. Observation and comprehensive assessments are conducted to identify specific challenges individuals may face in daily life and employment settings.

Life skills training encompasses a range of areas, including self-care, organisation and routines, planning, budgeting, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills. The OT will work collaboratively with you to develop tailored interventions, focusing on skill acquisition and practice and application in real-life contexts within the home and community. Assistive aids and sensory strategies may also be incorporated to enhance engagement and independence in activities where appropriate.

Employment support involves assessing a client's vocational interests, skills, and barriers to employment, before developing strategies and skills to enhance employability. This can include job coaching, compiling and writing a CV, developing interpersonal, time management and communication skills, or advising workplace modifications and assistive technology recommendations to optimise job performance.

Flying Kite OT additionally acts as an advocate to seek fair employment opportunities and assist you in accessing, understanding and negotiating fair workplace conditions and wages.

Life skills and employment support is beneficial for individuals with a broad range of disabilities and can include those who may wish to return to work or those transitioning into new life stages, such as young adults entering the workforce.
