Sensory Processing & Emotional Regulation

Sensory regulation and processing refers to the brain's ability to organise and interpret information received through the senses, including touch, sight, sound, taste, and smell. Individuals with sensory processing difficulties may experience challenges in effectively processing and responding to sensory stimuli from their environment, leading to disruptions in daily activities and functioning, including emotional dysregulation.

Occupational therapy plays a crucial role in supporting individuals with sensory processing. At Flying Kite OT, we provide comprehensive assessment, identifying specific sensory challenges for the individual, which helps us to determine how these impact the individual's daily life and participation in activities.

Intervention strategies may include sensory integration techniques, environmental modifications, assistive aids and personalised sensory diets tailored to the individual's needs.

Occupational therapy for sensory processing difficulties is beneficial for individuals across the lifespan, particularly those with neurodevelopmental differences, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as individuals with sensory modulation challenges or sensitivities as part of mental health and trauma. The therapy aims to enhance adaptive responses to sensory input, ultimately improving overall functional capacity and promoting meaningful engagement in daily life activities.
